Core competencesThe Department of Electrical and Information Engineering has eight primary research areas of world class quality. These are wireless communications, electronics, intelligent systems, machine vision, ubiquitous computing, electronics materials, photonics, and wellness technology. Research administration has been divided into laboratories. The research groups of the department are part of Infotech Oulu.
FiDiPro professorships indicate high research qualityThe high research quality at the department is indicated by four FiDiPro professorhips funded by the Academy of Finland and Tekes - the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation. The whole University of Oulu has received altogether 6 professorhips. Professors Ghassan Jabbour, Ryuji Kohno, Behnaam Aazhang, and Tadashi Matsumoto represent the absolute international top in their research areas. The FiDiPro programme funds their work at The University of Oulu until 2012. In addition, FiDiPro Fellow Vassilis Kostakos has joined the department. The Academy of Finland has awarded an academy professorship for Juha Kostamovaara. His areas of specialties are related to electronics. Currently 40 academy professors work at the Finnish universities.
Top research assessment exercise resultsThe research at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering has been ranked internationally on a high level in the 2007 research assessment exercise of The University of Oulu. Research at the laboratories of electronics, microelectronics and materials physics, and telecommunications, as well as at Centre for wireless communications (CWC), were ranked on a very high international level. In the university focus area evaluation, related to the 2007 research assessment exercise, five Infotech Oulu groups operating fully or partly at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering, were ranked excellent: Circuits and Systems (CAS-Oulu), Electronics Materials, Packaking and Reliability Systems (EMPART), Machine Vision Group (MVG), Optoelectronics and Measurement Unit (OPME), and Wireless Communication Systems (WCS). |
