World-class researchDepartment of Electrical and Information Engineering has eight primary research areas of world class quality. These are wireless communications, electronics, intelligent systems, machine vision, ubiquitous computing, electronics materials, photonics, and wellness technology. The high research quality is indicated by four FiDiPro professors acting at the department, funded by the Academy of Finland and Tekes, while the whole university of Oulu has received altogether 6 such professorhips. In addition, an academy professorship has been awarded to the department in electronics. The research has been ranked internationally on a very high level in the 2007 research assessment exercise of The University of Oulu, at the laboratories of electronics, microelectronics and materials physics, and telecommunications, as well as at Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC).
Spin-off companiesThe research at the Department of Electrical and Information engineering originates regularly spin-off companies, which take commercial advantage of the academic results. Several spin-offs have gained international success. The large number of spin off companies indicates high quality and up-to-date research, and ability to commercialise academic research. |
