PhD Studies

Are you interested in having a PhD?

The aim of the PhD studies is to achieve a Dr Tech, PhD or Lic Tech degree, which prepares the candidate to independent academic research. In addition, the degree is required as a qualification in certain positions.

The degrees

It is possible to achieve either a Dr Tech, PhD or Lich Tech degree at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering. All degrees contain 60 ECTS of specific studies, according to the following profile:

  • Lic Tech: The thesis is a wider and more mature study than the master's thesis. However, the novelty and publication rate are allowed to be smaller. The thesis is reviewed at the Department of Electrical and Information Engineering.

  • Dr Tech: The thesis is an independent and wide-ranged research work, which includes novel technical information. The thesis often includes 5-8 international publications, and it is reviewed by outside pre-examiners. The thesis is composed in English and it must be defended in the public dissertation proceedings.

  • PhD: The same as Dr Tech. This degree is used when the subject is closer to the natural sciences than engineering, or when the student doesn't have a master's degree in engineering.
